Nantou Ancient Town

Nantou Ancient City, also known as Xin’an Ancient City, has a history that some say dates back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 331) with the current walled city built in 1394. In history, it is a sea defense fortress and has been governed by Hong Kong, Macao, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai.

Still standing are Nancheng gate (南头古城垣-南门) and Dongcheng gate (南头古城垣-正门) in the ancient city, which are sandwiched between the houses on both sides. There are historical sites such as Guandi Temple (关帝庙), Dongguan Hall (东莞会馆), and Xin’an Ancient City (新安古城).

There is also a Nantou Ancient City Museum (南头古城博物馆) outside the South Gate. There are many cultural relics displayed here, quietly telling the glory of the ancient city.

It was first built to guard Dongguan and later became a government department location for Xin’an County.
